Frequently asked questions about HFA-152a

What is HFA-152a?

HFA-152a is an investigational propellant being developed by GSK plc for use in inhaled respiratory medicines, with asthma as the studied indication. It is a hydrofluoroalkane, 1,1-difluoroethane, evaluated as an alternative to the propellant HFA-134a in metered dose inhalers. It is not a stand-alone asthma therapy but a component of the inhaler delivery system.

What is HFA-152a used for in asthma?

HFA-152a is being studied as the propellant that delivers asthma medication from a pressurized metered dose inhaler, replacing HFA-134a. GSK is testing whether exposure to HFA-152a is safe in people with asthma and whether it affects mucociliary clearance, the lung's mechanism for clearing inhaled particles. It is not itself a bronchodilator or anti-inflammatory treatment.

Who is developing HFA-152a?

GSK plc, which trades under the ticker GSK, is the developer of HFA-152a. The company is running the clinical program evaluating the propellant in asthma and in healthy participants, including studies conducted in the United States, Argentina, Canada and the United Kingdom.

What phase is HFA-152a in?

HFA-152a is in Phase 3 development. A Phase 3 study comparing four weeks of exposure to HFA-152a and HFA-134a in participants with asthma is currently recruiting. An earlier Phase 1 study of the effect of both propellants on mucociliary clearance in healthy participants has been completed. HFA-152a is investigational and has not been approved.

What clinical trials is HFA-152a in?

Two trials are listed for HFA-152a. NCT07645248 is a recruiting Phase 3 study comparing the safety of four weeks of exposure to HFA-152a and HFA-134a in 110 participants with asthma across the United States, Argentina, Canada and the United Kingdom. NCT06506266 was a completed Phase 1 study of mucociliary clearance in 24 healthy participants in the United Kingdom.

Is HFA-152a the same as HFA-134a?

No. HFA-152a is 1,1-difluoroethane, while HFA-134a is 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane. They are distinct hydrofluoroalkane propellants. GSK's trials compare the two directly, using HFA-134a as the comparator to assess the safety and lung-clearing effects of HFA-152a in asthma and in healthy participants.
