November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month, and our Volition Veterinary CEO, Dr. Tom Butera, shares the story of his late dog, Sunny, a Golden Retriever, who sadly died of lymphoma at eight years old. Golden Retrievers, loved for their friendly personalities, are unfortunately susceptible to many cancers, as are other large breed dogs .
As a veterinarian, Tom has seen similar experiences with many pet parents throughout his career, explaining to families that while their dog seems perfectly happy and healthy, they may have to prepare to say goodbye before they’re ready to.
Our Nu.Q ® Vet Cancer Test is a simple blood test to aid early detection of cancer in dogs. Cancer is the most common cause of death in dogs over the age of two in the US; it’s estimated that 50% of all dogs over the age of 10 will develop cancer in their lifetimes. But earlier cancer detection can improve outcomes, and the quality of life of the dog and its owner.
