When to replace CPAP supplies

To get the most out of your sleep apnea therapy, using your CPAP machine is only half the battle. The other half is making sure you inspect and replace your supplies as often as needed to maximize seal, comfort and health benefits.

If you don’t replace your toothbrush every 3–4 months, the bristles wear down, fall out and your toothbrush becomes much less effective in cleaning your teeth. Similar things happen to CPAP masks and supplies with use. For instance, mask cushions collect dirt, oil and bacteria from your face. These can deposit back onto your face while you sleep and cause skin irritation as well as create odors and affect how well the mask seals.

CPAP machine filters also need to be changed out for the same reasons that your car and vacuum filters do; build-up over time makes them less effective and may even contribute to nasal symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes.

Based on general wear and tear, we suggest that you use the following as a guideline to replace your CPAP parts :

Every month

• Mask cushions and/or nasal pillows

• CPAP machine filters

Every 3 months

• Mask frame (not including the headgear)

• CPAP tubing

Every 6 months

• Mask headgear

• Chin strap (if applicable)

• Humidifier water tub

The great news is Medicare and most private insurers will cover scheduled replacements of all CPAP mask parts and other supplies. Ask your insurance provider about how often you can replace your supplies. Your medical equipment supplier can also answer questions about when and how to request a CPAP mask replacement or other supplies.

Cleaning your equipment as recommended is also key to ensuring that it works as well as possible for as long as you need it to last. Your mask’s user guide will tell you exactly when and how to clean each part or check out the support section for your mask for video tutorials.
