Summary
Nasogastric intubation, a commonly used medical procedure, often causes trauma, pain, and discomfort during both insertion and the time the tube remains in place. While lubricating jelly helps during insertion, it is quickly absorbed and does not reduce friction or discomfort during the indwelling phase.
This study evaluated NGShield, a device that uses surface acoustic waves on the nasogastric tube to reduce tissue contact and friction. In a single-center, blinded, crossover study, 24 healthy volunteers had a nasogastric tube inserted and left in place for six hours. The device was alternately activated and deactivated every hour, and participants reported pain and discomfort throughout the indwelling period, as well as during insertion and removal. Pain and discomfort levels were compared between active and inactive phases of the device.
Results: The activated NG-Shield was found to reduce both pain and discomfort significantly in both the nose and throat throughout the indwelling phase.
Conclusions
The NG-Shield is a safe and effective device for reducing pain and discomfort associated with an indwelling nasogastric tube
